The Colleges of Education Teachers Association of Ghana (CETAG) has issued a strong statement refuting allegations made by the Executive Secretary of the National Labour Commission (NLC) and the Honorable Minister for Education regarding their ongoing industrial action.

In the statement issued on August 13, 2024, CETAG accused both officials of twisting facts in an attempt to portray the union as unreasonable and in breach of agreements.

The statement detailed that the current strike is a direct result of the NLC’s inaction in enforcing the compulsory arbitration award issued in favor of CETAG on May 2, 2023.

According to CETAG, despite multiple requests and letters requesting enforcement, the NLC only referred the matter to their legal department, failing to take any concrete action for over eight months.

CETAG further refuted the NLC’s claim that the union is in contempt of court, stating that no court has ordered the strike to be called off.

They also emphasized that the NLC has yet to make a determination on the legality of the strike action, despite the ongoing injunction case filed against CETAG.

Regarding the Education Minister’s statements regarding the signed Memorandum of Agreement (MoA), CETAG clarified that the union’s National Council has not approved the document and has informed the Ministry and stakeholders of its disapproval.

The statement also highlighted the Minister’s own history of failing to uphold agreements, citing previous instances where he failed to honor letters of assurance and communiques aimed at ending similar strikes.

CETAG maintained its stance that the strike is a result of the government’s failure to fulfill its obligations and called on both the NLC and the Education Minister to take responsibility for their role in the current situation.

According to the leadership of CETAG, they are committed to fighting for the rights and welfare of their members and will continue the strike action until their demands are met.
