The Colleges of Education Teachers Association of Ghana (CETAG) has issued a notice of their intention to embark on an industrial action to protect their economic rights as workers.

In a letter addressed to the Chief Executive of the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission (FWSC), the association cited several reasons for their decision to resort to strike.

According to CETAG, their employer has willfully failed to comply with the National Labour Commission’s Compulsory Arbitration Award issued on 2nd May 2023, and the NLC is reluctant to compel their employer to comply with the orders and directives.

Additionally, they asserted that the FWSC and the Ministry of Education have deliberately refused to pay deserving members a top-up of research allowance as arrears arising from the 2023 Conditions of Service Agreement.

CETAG also ‘accused’ the Conference of Principals of Colleges of Education and the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission of unilaterally varying their existing office-holding positions and allowances in violation of their 2023 Conditions of Service Agreement.

“We wish to state unequivocally that the union shall no longer countenance any further violations of our rights as workers by any authority under the 1992 Constitution of Ghana,” said CETAG in the letter.

The association revealed that should they resume their strike, it would not be called off until all outstanding arbitration awards and related issues are resolved.

“The union wishes to affirm our decision to proceed on strike by notifying our Employer that we will not call off our strike action until all the outstanding Compulsory Arbitration Awards and related concerns raised are settled through payments to our members”

However, they implored the FWSC to uphold the Constitution of Ghana and the Labour Act, 2003.
