All AngloGold Ashanti (AGA) schools in Obuasi have been temporarily closed due to escalating security concerns in the area, following violent clashes between small-scale miners and military personnel guarding the AGA Obuasi Mine.

The closure, effective January 20 and 21, comes in response to a spate of incidents including the burning of vehicles and damage to private properties within the town.

The decision to close the schools was announced by management in a press release on January 19, 2025, citing the need to prioritize the safety and well-being of students, staff, parents, and the broader community.

The unrest in Obuasi is a direct result of the deadly confrontation between small-scale miners and soldiers, which reportedly left eight people dead.

This incident has sparked widespread tension and heightened security risks in the town, prompting the school closures.

“The closure aims to ensure the safety and welfare of students, staff, parents, and other stakeholders,” the press release stated.

The schools are slated to remain closed on Monday, January 20, and Tuesday, January 21, 2025, with a provisional plan to reopen on Wednesday, January 23, provided the security situation improves and calm is restored.
