Brief Background

Mount Mary College of Education is a teacher education college situated north-east of Somanya, on a hill overlooking the Somanya and Odumase townships.

The college was founded in Agormanya in 1947 and moved to its present location in 1951.

Mt. Mary College of Education has offered several courses at different levels of attainment in line with government policy on teacher education.

The college started with a two-year Post Middle Teacher’s Certificate ‘B’ course.

In 1953, Certificate ‘A’ Post ‘B’ was also started. In January 1954, the college added a third variety of students – Teachers’ External Certificate holders, who were admitted to do a two-year course for the award of the Teacher’s Certificate ‘A’ Post ‘B’ External.

In 1963, Teacher’s Certificate ‘A’ 4-year was started. These two courses remained till 1974 when the status of the college changed to 2-year Post Secondary College.

A year later, students were admitted for a 3-year Post Secondary course.

The college remained a male institution until September 1974 when it became co-educational with the admission of 20 female students.

Current Programmes

Currently, It is one of the 46 public colleges of education in Ghana and is affiliated with the University of Ghana, Legon.

Mount Mary College of Education has received an Institutional accreditation from Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) to run the following programs;

  1. 4-year Bachelor of Education in Primary Education program (regular).
  2. 4-year Bachelor of Education in Junior High School Programme (regular) with specialisms in;
    a. Social Studies and History
    b. English and Ghanaian Language
    c. R.M.E and Music
    d. French and English
    e. French and Ghanaian Language.

The motto of the college is VIRTUS ET SCIENTIA (Character and Knowledge).

However, D7 is not an acceptable grade for getting admission into Mount Mary College of Education. Your only guarantee for admission is to PASS in your WASSCE with a good grade(A1-C6)

Admission Requirements

The general requirement for admission to the 4-Year Bachelor of Education (B.Ed) Programme is as follows:

WASSCE Holders:                                

CREDIT PASSES (A1-C6) in six (6) subjects comprising Three (3) Core subjects, including English Language, and Core Mathematics, and Three (3) Elective subjects relevant to the course of

SSSCE Holders:

CREDIT PASSES (A-D) in six (6) subjects comprising Three(3) Core subjects, including English Language, and Core Mathematics, and Three (3) Elective subjects relevant to the course of study.

Candidates who are yet to write either the WASSCE or NABPTEX examinations this year can also apply as awaiting results
