There have been a lot of speculations concerning the fruit that Adam and Eve ate in the Garden of Eden. The majority are of the view it was an ‘apple fruit’ they ate.
Others are also saying otherwise. This has even caused some individuals to forbid the eating of apple. But was it really an ‘apple fruit’ Adam and Eve ate?
Was the fruit an apple?
If your answer is Yes, then you are probably wrong. The Hebrew Bible doesn’t specify what type of fruit Adam and Eve ate. I wonder where the apple concept emanated from. There is no indication in the Bible that it was an apple.
Even with our English translations, there wasn’t a single page stated Adam and Eve ate from an apple tree!
The command
From when the Command was given to Adam through to when they flaunted it, nowhere was it indicated that the fruit was an apple in the Bible!
For us to get a clearer understanding, let us bisect the command the LORD gave to Adam.
Then the Lord God took the man and put him in the garden of Eden to tend and keep it. And the LORD God commanded the man, saying, “of every tree of the garden you may eat freely; “but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you shall eat of it you shall surely die” Genesis 2:15-17 NKJV
It is captivating to know that, God never mentioned of any apple tree here! It was clearly the tree of Knowledge and Evil! Have a look at this;
So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree desirable to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate. She also gave to her husband with her and he ate. Genesis 3:6 NKJV
The Hebrew word used in this verse is “peri”, a generic word for fruit in both Biblical and modern Hebrew! The worst part is, the word “apple”, which in Hebrew “tapuach” does not appear anywhere in Genesis! And It doesn’t even appear in the first five books of the Hebrew Bible!
These are clear indications the idea of Adam and Eve eating an apple is false. There is more to that than we are told! Yes, truly they might have ate of a fruit but it wasn’t an apple!
If the fruit wasn’t an apple, then what was it?
From the discussion so far, you could clearly see the name of the” forbidden fruit” was not mentioned-The only thing we know of is the “Tree of Good and Evil!”. And there is no one who can clearly point out the type of fruit it was. But grab the enlightenment it was not an ‘apple’.
Input
I am strongly convinced within my spirit that, the entire “story” is an analogy of how Man became disobedient and fell from His Glory! It is much clear everything in the passage centred on the will of Man to either obey or disobey.
And the write-up is just a clear illustration of how Greedy Man is. It tells how unsatisfied Man could be no matter the quantum of resources at his disposal, he will still desire for more!
Very interesting. This is what happens when we dont read our bible. I always have the thought that, it was apple they ate. Thank u Minister.
